Biographical/Historical Note

Born in 1948, John Marvin Pope graduated from the University of Texas at Austin (UT)
with a B.A. in 1970 and M.A. in history in 1972. During his time at UT, he worked as
a journalist for The Daily Texan. Inspired by the experience of humorist and radio
broadcaster John Henry Faulk, Pope's master's thesis, "Trial Without Jury:
Blacklisting in Broadcasting," explores the issue of blacklisting in the media
during the period after the Second World War known as the Second Red Scare. Pope
buttressed his thesis by including firsthand accounts from blacklisted media figures
that appeared in Red Channels, published in 1951 by the journal Counterattack to
identify dozens of Hollywood figures and their purported affiliations with groups or
statements that supported communism. Pope later worked as a higher education
journalist for the Times-Picayune in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Scope and Contents

The John M. Pope Papers, 1950-1996 (bulk 1950-1972), are divided into two series,
Master's Thesis and Journalism Career. Correspondence, research notes, clippings,
edited drafts, and a bound copy of Pope's thesis, "Trial Without Jury: Blacklisting
in Broadcasting," compose the Master's Thesis series, 1950-1972. Correspondence,
1970-1973, includes copies of the form letter and questionnaire that Pope sent to
individuals named in Red Channels and replies from critic Jack Gould, screenwriter
Allan Sloane, folklore singer Pete Seeger, playwright Marc Connelly, and several
others. Research notes, ca.1971-192, document Pope's interview with John Henry Faulk
as well as his research on blacklisting. Clippings, 1950, 1955, 1972, include an
article on the removal of actress Jean Muir from the NBC sitcom The Aldrich Family
and a 1972 article documenting the lives and whereabouts of the first media figures
blacklisted, the so-called "Hollywood Ten," blacklisted in 1947. Edited drafts,
ca.1971-1972, contain annotated and corrected pages and chapters from Pope's
master's thesis, including the edits he sent to a typist.

Newspaper articles written by Pope for the New Orleans Times-Picayune between 1978
and 1996 comprise the Journalism Career series. Writings address the impact of
Reaganomics on the poor in New Orleans, Pope's trip to China in 1978, and a 1996
trip to the former residences of the late President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
