A Guide to the Daniel Ruggles Papers, 1846-1909
Biographical NoteSoldier Daniel Ruggles (1810-1897), born in Barre, Massachusetts, graduated from West Point in 1833, fought in the Second Seminole War, and arrived in Texas in 1845, where he soon served in the Mexican War. In 1861, during the onset of the Civil War, he quit the U. S. Army and joined the Virginia Volunteers for the Confederacy as a brigadier general. He fought in several battles, including Aquia Creek, Mathias Point, and Shiloh, where he is remembered for directing the Confederate artillery barrage against the Union forces in the “hornet’s nest.” Source: Thorson, Lysa. “Daniel Ruggles.” Find a Grave. Correspondence between Ruggles’ family, primarily his brother, concerns his experiences in the Mexican War, his work as a soldier in Texas during the 1850’s, and opportunities for entering the cattle business in the Fort Belknap area. Newspaper clippings concern the infringement of Ruggles patent concerning a method for precipitating rainstorms, General Dyrenforth’s rainmaking balloon, and an obituary for Mortimer B. Ruggles.
