Biographical Note

Henry R. Maresh (1890-1954) worked as a surgeon in Houston as well as an historian and author. His most notable work was Czech Pioneers of the Southwest, published in 1934.

Scope and Contents

Composed of correspondence, notebooks, essays and encyclopedic articles, the Henry Maresh Papers, [ca. 1900s-1950s] document the research and interests of the scholar. Essays and articles relate to Czech history, particularly their settlement in Texas, biographies of notable Czech-Texans as well as Russians, a copy of "The Czechs in Texas" by Maresh and published in the Southwestern Historical Quarterly along with earlier drafts, and various other essays written by Maresh on a variety of topics, notably his experiences at the University of Texas. Correspondence relates to Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, while notebooks concern college courses taken by Maresh.
