Biographical Note

Born to Absolum and Elizabeth (Epperson) Redman in Adair County, Kentucky, Wesley Redman (1810-1886) married Susan Harris in 1831. Following the birth of their three children, Redman’s wife died in 1844. A farmer by profession, he moved to Warren County, where he married Nancy Elizabeth Morris, with whom he had five children. After moving to Cynthiana, Indiana, Redman enlisted in Company A of the 58th Indiana Regiment of Volunteers in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, a certificate, financial records, legal documents, newspaper clippings, and a biographical sketch comprise the Wesley Redman Papers, 1832-1919, 1959, chronicling Redman’s experiences during the Civil War as well as his business affairs as a farmer. Correspondence concerns life within the 58th Indiana Regiment of Volunteers, the activities of the Confederate Army in Missouri, the recruitment of army volunteers, emigration to Oklahoma, oilfield production, and familial affairs. Financial records consist of receipts, invoices, a mortgage, and tax assessments relating to his farm and the purchase of household goods, while legal documents include a contract and an indenture. Additionally, a certificate concerns United States citizenship, newspaper clippings relate to prices of wheat, and a biographical sketch discusses Redman’s life in Kentucky and Indiana.
