Biographical Note

Born in Henry County, Virginia, Peter Goodman Rea (1819-1899) moved with his family to Cooper County, Missouri, after the death of his mother in 1827. Following the death of his father in 1835, Rea joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and enrolled in the Cumberland Presbyterian College in Kentucky in 1837. Despite not graduating from the program due to poor health, he became an ordained minister in 1841. Working as an itinerant preacher and missionary for two years, in 1843 Rea married Mary Evangeline Rubey, with whom he had five children. He settled with his family in Saline County, Missouri, where he became a member of the Missouri Synod and later was elected as the president of the Missouri Female College in 1863.
