Slave owner and soldier Benjamin F. Piper (d. 1864) fought and was mortally wounded
during the Civil War. Initially stationed at Camp Henry E. McCullough in Victoria,
Texas, he later traveled to Alton, Tennessee and Barnesville, Georgia.

Legal papers and correspondence comprise the Benjamin F. Piper Family Papers,
1847-1874, documenting Piper’s life and military career. Legal papers concern the
purchase of slaves and land tax receipts. Correspondence from Piper to his mother,
Susan Piper, describes military life at Camp Henry E. McCullough, while a 1864
letter from S. G. Sneed to Susan Piper informs her of her son’s death on a Georgia
battlefield.
