Biographical Note

William A. Philpott, Jr., served as secretary of the Texas Bankers Association from 1915 through 1964. In addition to his professional endeavors, Philpott collected Texana, including the letters of Texas revolutionaries and Civil War soldiers over a fifty-year period. By the 1980s, he had amassed nearly 900 items, most of which were sold at an auction in Dallas, Texas, in 1986.

Scope and Contents

Composed of correspondence, the Philpott Texana Collection, 1844-1879, documents social and political affairs in Texas spanning from the antebellum period to Reconstruction. Including the letters of Richard T. Archer, James Hall Bell, Richard Bennett Hubbard, Elisha M. Pease, and Fletcher S. Stockdale, the correspondence concerns the bills passed by the Texas Legislature, the Civil War, slavery, and Hood’s Texas Brigade.
