Biographical Note

Born to David S. Phelan and Elizabeth Cail near Trenton, Tennessee, Macum Phelan (1874-1950) was raised by relatives in Waco, Texas, following the death of his parents at an early age. Phelan worked on a ranch in McLennan County until attending the University of Texas at Austin (UT), where he earned a teaching certificate. After teaching for six years in McLennan County, in 1900 he acquired the Moody Courier, though he sold it two years later. Phelan returned to UT to study ministry and became an ordained minister in 1907. In addition to working in a number of different pastorates, Phelan served as a faculty member at Southwestern University and Southern Methodist University, while also authoring History of Methodism in Texas: Early Methodism in Texas, 1817-1866 (1924), History of Methodism in Texas: Expansion of Methodism in Texas, 1867-1902 (1937), and A Handbook of all Denominations (1930 and 1933).

Composed of correspondence, literary productions, and notes, the Macum Phelan Papers, 1918-1936, document Phelan’s career as a Methodist pastor and author. Correspondence concerns his research on the careers of various Methodist pastors as well as the publication of his books on the history of Methodism. Additionally, literary productions consist of poetry and excerpts of essays on the history of the Methodist Church in Texas, while notes include lists of pastors and their tenure.
