A Guide to the Panhandle Stock Association Records, 1887-1888, 1926

Biographical Note

Created by Charles Goodnight for the benefit and protection of cattle ranchers against rustlers in 1880, the Panhandle Stock Association hired inspectors, detectives, and attorneys to arrest and prosecute rustlers. Additionally, they rewarded those who apprehended cattle thieves. The association was also responsible for building the great drift fence across the northern Panhandle in 1882, and controlled the movement of tick-infested herds from south Texas. After periods of drought, depression, and the close of the open range, the Panhandle Stock Association disbanded in 1889.

Scope and Contents

A bound volume of Photostats comprises the Panhandle Stock Association Records, 1887-1888, 1926, documenting the organization of the Panhandle Stock Association. Photostats include application surveys, a constitution, by-laws, and meeting minutes. Additionally, a 1926 article from the newspaper The Southwest Plainsman chronicles the history of the group.
