Born to Robert Thomas Nixon and Frances Amanda Andrews in Guadalupe County, Texas, Patrick Ireland Nixon (1883-1965) received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1905 and his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1909. He established a medical practice in San Antonio in 1911, while also working as a staff member of several hospitals, including Nix Memorial, Santa Rosa, and Baptist Memorial. A year later, Nixon married Olive Gray Read, with whom he had four children. In 1926, he was appointed president of the Bexar County Medical Association and of the Texas Surgical Society in 1956. Composed of correspondence and unpublished manuscripts, the Patrick Ireland Nixon Papers, [ca. 1950-1962], chronicle Nixon’s historical research on Texas. Correspondence with historian Samuel Asbury concerns various subjects on Texas history, while unpublished manuscripts contain historical sketches of Ann Raney Coleman and Harriet A. Ames and their experiences in the early 19th century Texas frontier.
