A Guide to the John E. Sunder Papers, 1945-1996
Biographical NoteProfessor Emeritus John Edward Sunder (1928-2011) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. After serving two years in the U.S. Army in Korea, he joined the history faculty at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin in 1956. During his 37-year career as a professor of Western History at UT, Sunder authored a plethora of journal articles, book reviews, and three books on the Missouri River fur trade. Sunder’s interests also included Arctic and Canadian history and he taught the first course concerning Native Americans offered by the UT history department. Scope and ContentsCorrespondence, academic papers, bound volumes, and photographs comprise the John E. Sunder Papers, 1945-1996, chronicling Sunder’s academic career. The collection includes published articles, diplomas, a high school yearbook, and a curriculum vitae. A bound copy of Sunder’s 1950 master’s dissertation and six volumes of his publications (1954-1996) document his scholarly work.
