A Guide to the Ferdinand Nehls Papers, 1853, [ca. 1861-1865]
Biographical NoteBorn in Germany, Ferdinand Nehls immigrated to the United States in 1855, eventually settling in Comal County, Texas, where he was a schoolmaster. During the Civil War, Nehls worked at the Headquarters of the Western Sub-District in Fort Brown, Texas. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsComposed of typescripts and newspaper clippings, the Ferdinand Nehls Papers, 1853, [ca. 1861-1865], chronicle the daily orders of a Confederate Civil War Regiment. Daily orders and newspaper clippings are extracted from the order book of the Headquarters of the Western Sub-District in Fort Brown, and document regulations, unit orders, and the cost of supplies. Newspaper articles by Oscar Haas entitled “From Civil War Days” largely contain the same information as the typescripts.
