Scope and Contents
Composed of correspondence, bonds, election returns, deeds, certificates, a scrapbook, photographs, and engravings, the Mississippi Papers, 1807-1951, chronicle the history of the state. Photostat election returns document the outcome of the 1860 and 1889 elections in counties throughout Mississippi. Various government-issued documents, particularly bonds, discuss legal proceedings in the state in the 19th century. Correspondence largely consists of reports from elected officials in Washington, D. C. and the state governor as well as commissions for the officials. Additionally, the scrapbook consists of newspaper articles about Mississippi and an academic article regarding Mississippians’ attitudes towards the annexation of Texas. Photographs and engravings depict notable Mississippians of the 19th century.
