A Guide to the Bernardo de Miranda Papers, 1755-1756
Biographical NoteIn 1755, Lieutenant governor of Texas Bernardo de Miranda y Flores was ordered by Governor Jacinto de Barrios y Jáuregui to organize an expedition to the mineral deposits of Cerro del Almagre and the Almagre Grande, or known collectively as Los Almagres. With a team of soldiers and an Indian interpreter, Miranda y Flores left San Antonio in February 1756. A month later, he discovered silver mines in the region and was appointed captain of a presidio. Decrees from the governor of Texas Jacinto de Barrios y Jáuregui, among others, concern permissions for the expedition and the presidio, while notifications from Miranda relate to the defense of the presidio.
