In 1755, Lieutenant governor of Texas Bernardo de Miranda y Flores was ordered by Governor Jacinto de Barrios y Jáuregui to organize an expedition to the mineral deposits of Cerro del Almagre and the Almagre Grande, or known collectively as Los Almagres. With a team of soldiers and an Indian interpreter, Miranda y Flores left San Antonio in February 1756. A month later, he discovered silver mines in the region and was appointed captain of a presidio. The mines, however, were not excavated during his tenure.
