A Guide to the Edward Milliken Papers,
Biographical NoteBorn in Down-Patrick Town, Ireland, in 1788, physician Edward Milliken received his medical education in New York City. He moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania, and married Jane Knox around 1828, after which he immigrated to Ohio. A decade of difficulties in acquiring a land certificate delayed Milliken from moving to Texas. He finally arrived in Parker County, Texas, in 1859. There, he continued to practice medicine as well as serving as county treasurer before his death in 1869. The poem is entitled “The Land We Live In,” while maps detail Parker County and a ranch. Additionally, broadsides entitled “Hacienda El Sacramento” and “The Carriers of the New York Enquirer” are included.
