He moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania, and married Jane Knox around 1828, after which he immigrated to Ohio. A decade of difficulties in acquiring a land certificate delayed Milliken from moving to Texas. He finally arrived in Parker County, Texas, in 1859. There, he continued to practice medicine as well as serving as county treasurer before his death in 1869.

Scope and Contents

Composed of correspondence, account papers, a poem, an affidavit, maps, broadsides, a family sketch, and newspaper clippings, the Edward Milliken Papers, 1848-1920, chronicle the personal and business experiences of Milliken in the mid-19th century. The bulk of the correspondence relates to difficulty with a land claim in Texas, though familial affairs, medical bills, contracts, and bank statements are also present. The poem is entitled “The Land We Live In,” while maps detail Parker County and a ranch. Additionally, broadsides entitled “Hacienda El Sacramento” and “The Carriers of the New York Enquirer” are included. A brief outline of the family history written in 1920 provides background information on various Milliken family members, including Edward.
