Biographical Note

After receiving his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and his PhD from Indiana University, Robert Mettlen became a faculty member in the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at Austin in 1966. Mettlen taught courses in finance until being appointed vice president for administration by President Peter T. Flawn in 1979. Five years later, he was selected to be vice president for planning and special projects. In 1982, Mettlen became chairman of the board of directors for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas, later serving as the interim president in 1987.

Scope and Contents

Composed of reports, printed material, and meeting minutes, the Robert Mettlen Papers, 1983-1993, document Mettlen’s activities as chairman of the board of directors and interim president for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas. Reports concern revised credit policies of the bank, audit plans, budget requests and adjustments, the real estate market, as well as other branches of the Federal Home Loan Bank, such as those in Pittsburgh and Little Rock. Printed material consists of the Federal Home Loan Bank’s News, an employee handbook, and publications on the banking industry, including the Texas Banking Red Book and Reaching Out: A Thrift Industry Initiative. Additionally, the collection contains the board of director’s meeting minutes.
