Preacher and writing teacher Jerry Martin farmed and taught writing school in Tioga,
Texas. In 1897, Martin moved to Whitesboro and became a student at the Whitesboro
Normal College.

A diary comprises the Jerry Martin Diary, 1894-1897, documenting Martin’s daily life
and activities. Semi-weekly entries shed light on his courtship and marriage
proposal to “Miss Ida,” his farming work such as picking cotton, his writing school
in Tioga, and his studies to the Whitesboro Normal College.
