Historical Note

Author Barbara Neal Ledbetter attended North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) before receiving her master’s degree from West Texas State University (now West Texas A & M University). In addition to her work as an elementary school teacher in White Deer, Texas, Ledbetter was a prolific writer, authoring fiction as well as works on historical topics relating to Texas, such as Civil War Days in Young County, Texas, 1861-1865 (1965), Centennial Grahamana, 1872-1972 (1972), and Fort Belknap Frontier Saga: Indians, Negroes, and Anglo-Americans on the Texas Frontier (1982).

Scope and Contents

Composed of unpublished manuscripts, newspaper clippings, maps, indices, printed material, and miscellaneous research material, the Barbara Neal Ledbetter Collection, [ca. 1950-1982], documents Ledbetter’s research and writing process for her publications on 18th and 19th century Texas history, especially relating to Young County, Newscastle, and Fort Belknap. Manuscripts consist of typed articles on various subjects, such as cemeteries in Jack County, coal-mining towns, and trails in West Texas. Newspaper clippings also concern varied topics, including politics and politicians, Fort Belknap, Young County, and historical figures; maps illustrate parts of Texas; and printed material such as brochures and magazines pertain to Texas history. The collection also includes indices to such publications as The History of Jack County by Thomas F. Horton and Fort Richardson, Texas by W. W. Bill Dennis, and miscellaneous research material consisting of notes and genealogical documentation.
