Biographical Note

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Thomas F. Leaming (1786-1839) married Susan Murgatroyde, with whom he had one son. A relative of Moses and Stephen F. Austin, Leaming worked as a merchant in Philadelphia while also serving as a business associate with power of attorney for the Austin family.

Scope and Contents

Composed of original and typescripts of correspondence, legal documents, and broadsides, the Thomas F. Leaming Papers, 1796-1847, chronicle Leaming’s business and personal relationship with the Austin family. Correspondence concerns familial affairs, life in the Austin Colony as well as a lawsuit over land in New Jersey that once belonged to the Austin family. Additionally, legal documents also relate to the lawsuit, while broadsides pertain to the Texas Revolution, specifically the recruitment soldiers.
