Biographical Note
Born in Prentiss County, Mississippi, J. O. Langford (b. 1875) traveled with his daughter and pregnant wife Bessie to Big Bend region of Texas, in 1909. After settling in Alpine, Langford and his family were forced to flee to El Paso in 1913 due to unrest near the border with Mexico. In 1927, he returned to Alpine, where purchased five acres to build his homestead. Langford eventually published Big Bend: A Homesteader’s Story (1952), an account of his life in Big Bend.
Scope and Contents
Composed of an unpublished manuscript and two copies of a typescript, the J. O. Langford Reminiscences, [ca. 1950-1954], document Langford’s experiences in Mississippi and Texas. The typescript contains an account of his childhood and life in the Alpine, Texas, while the manuscript consists of a draft of Big Bend: A Homesteader’s Story. The reminiscences describe Big Bend, raising cattle, and relations with Native Americans in the area.
