A Guide to the Dan Austin Kelley Family Papers, 1866-1880

Biographical Note

Attorney Daniel Austin Kelley (1849-1927) was a native of Grimes County, Texas and the son of John and Anna America (Moore) Kelley from Georgia. One of ten children, Daniel had four brothers: Benjamin Franklin, John Washington, Willis Ward, George G. Kelley, and five sisters: Lucy Green, Francis Cornelia, Viola Adelia, Camilla Sanford, and Jeannette (Nettie) Caroline. In the 1870s, Daniel Austin Kelley attended the University of Virginia.

Scope and Contents

Correspondence comprises the Dan Austin Kelley Family Papers, 1866-1880, addressed to Dan Kelley from family members, including his mother Anna America Kelley, his brothers Franklin, George, and Benjamin, and his sister Nettie Kelley, amongst others. These letters relate to familial matters such as deaths, marriages, illnesses, crops, land conditions, and the use of freedman as laborers. Additionally, the collection includes receipts of gold shipments (1871-1872) to Dan while he was at the University of Virginia.
