Biographical Note

Landowner and saddlemaker Sem Kegley (1813-1889) was born in Wythe County, Virginia. In the 1840s, Kegley moved to Texas and resided in Belton, the county seat of Bell County, Texas. He married Sarah Anne Carpenter and was appointed treasurer of Bell County in 1867.

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, business papers, political papers, and land deeds comprise the Sem Kegley Papers, 1848-1868, documenting Kegley’s life in Bell County, Texas. Correspondence (1848-1860) from his brother John in Wythe County, Virginia relates to family affairs, while business papers (1852-1866) consist of tax receipts, including 1863 Confederate war tax receipts. Additionally, political papers include an appointment to the position of treasurer of Bell County, Texas (1867).
