Biographical Note
A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Edward Johns (b. ca. 1824) served in the Texas Navy during the 1840s. During his service, he was stationed on the schooner-of-war San Antonio and the sloop-of-war Austin.
Scope and Contents
Comprising correspondence, sketches, inventories, nautical records, a certificate, and a journal, the Edward Johns Papers, 1841-1845, chronicle Johns’ experiences serving in the Texas Navy. Correspondence concerns the murder of a lieutenant in the navy, inventories document officers on board the sloop-of-war Austin, and nautical records consist of rules for finding latitudes and longitudes as well as logs. Originals and Photostats of sketches depict ships and international flags, while a certificate pertains to Johns’ service in the navy. Additionally, the journal describes Johns’ activities aboard the schooner-of-war San Antonio, as well as the ship’s course and sailing conditions.
