Biographical Note

Native Texan S. Lillian Ochiltree (b. 1859) was the daughter of Hugh Ochiltree (1820-1891) and Mary Josephine Shaw (1838-1923). In 1879, she married James Beverly Hill (1840-1889), a veteran of the Confederate Army. Descended from the royal house of Stewart in Scotland, the Ochiltrees immigrated to Cumberland County, North Carolina, in the mid-18th century. In 1839, William Beck Ochiltree, S. Lillian’s great-uncle, moved to Nacogdoches, Texas, where he served as judge of the Fifth Judicial District and in Sixth Texas Legislature in 1855. His son, Thomas Peck Ochiltree was appointed representative of the Galveston District in the Forty-eighth Congress.
