Biographical Note

Born to William Hendricks and Ann Parker Paul in Madison, Indiana, John Abram Hendricks (1823-1862) married Frances E. Norwood, with whom he had six children. In addition to serving in the Mexican War as captain of the 16th Indiana Infantry Regiment, Hendricks enlisted in the 22nd Indiana Infantry Regiment of the United States Army during the Civil War. He was killed at Pea Ridge, Arkansas, in 1862.

Comprising correspondence, a certificate, and a broadside, the John Abram Hendricks Papers, 1846-1848, [ca. 1862], chronicle the military career of Hendricks and the activities of Indiana regiments in the Mexican War and Civil War. Correspondence between Hendricks and 2nd Lieutenant John M. Lord concern the activities of the 3rd Indiana Infantry Regiment, while a Photostat of a certificate signed by President James K. Polk appoints Hendricks to captain of the 16th Indiana Infantry Regiment. Additionally, a Photostat of a broadside discusses the death of Hendricks and other men in the 22nd Indiana Infantry Regiment fighting in the Civil War.
