			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>Born to William Ramsey Hemphill and Hannah Lind in Abbeville County, South Carolina, Robert Reid Hemphill (1840-1908) worked as an editor for the <emph render="italic">Abbeville Medium</emph> as well as an attorney. During the Civil War, Hemphill enlisted in the Confederate Army, serving as a sergeant in Company G of the 1st South Carolina Infantry Regiment. Following the war, he briefly practiced law in Cleburne, Texas, before returning to his home in Abbeville County.</p>
