Biographical Note
Methodist Reverend Peter Haskew (1803-1865) served as a circuit rider in the antebellum South, particularly southern Alabama and west Florida before the Civil War. In 1840, he married Ann Withers with whom he had several children.
Scope and Contents
Composed of a typescript, the Peter Haskew Diary, 1836-1842, chronicles the life of a Methodist circuit preacher in the antebellum American South. Haskew traveled throughout southern Alabama and west Florida and was in charge of the mission at Apalachicola, Florida as well as a church in St. Joseph. His diary documents his daily experiences, such as his first train ride, meeting his wife, and describing a local burial.
