			<p>Established in Collin County, Texas, in 1883, the Hackberry Literary Club sought to
				improve the mental and moral health of its membership. Officers included the
				president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, critic, and two marshals. The
				constitution and by-laws describe the organization’s activities as singing, reading,
				writing, spelling, and declamation on topics ranging from cigarette smoking to
				women’s suffrage. </p>

			<p>A manuscript minute book and newspaper clipping compose the Hackberry Literary Club
				(Collin County, Tex.) Minutes, 1883-1884, 1896, documenting the history of the
				organization in Collin County, Texas. The ledger comprises the Hackberry Literary
				Club’s constitution and by-laws, a list of members, a treasurer’s account, and the
				minutes of meetings from January 1883 through November 1884. A transcription of the
					<title render="italic">Vineland Journal</title> from 1896 in the book discusses
				the activities of the club. Additionally, an undated newspaper clipping contains an
				article by club member Elder R. C. Horn about the lawlessness of the beer
				industry.</p>
