Biographical NoteH. H. Goodman was an educator for the public schools in Oenaville, Texas before earning a master’s degree in history from the University of Texas in 1918. He then taught education at Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now Texas State) until his death in 1937. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe H. H. Goodman Essay, 1918, composes Goodman’s thesis entitled “Presidential Elections of the Republic of Texas,” describing the presidential elections of 1838, 1841, and 1844. The thesis describes how Mirabeau Lamar won the 1838 election after both opponents committed suicide, that Sam Houston returned to the presidency in 1841, and that Anson Jones’ election three years later was dominated by the issue of annexation.
