Biographical Note

Born in Aurora, Illinois, Stanley K. Faye (1886-1949) was the son of Amine Knickerbocker and Charles Montrose Faye. Like his father, who was the first editor for the Aurora Daily News and served as the managing editor for The Chicago Daily News, Faye also pursued a career as in newspaper journalism. After attending the University of Chicago, he worked first as a reporter for The Chicago Journal and as the music critic for The Chicago Daily News. In 1947, Faye became the historical editor for The Aurora Beacon-News, though his failing eyesight forced him to retire shortly after. In addition, he was a member of various historical societies in Illinois, Louisiana, Florida, and Arkansas while also authoring several articles on privateers of the Gulf of Mexico which were published in the Louisiana Historical Quarterly as well as an unpublished fictional short story on pirate Jean Laffite and a biographical sketch of pirate Louis Michel Aury.

Scope and Contents

Four volumes comprise the Stanley Faye Narratives, 1943, documenting Faye’s research on the life of pirate Louis Michel Aury and privateers of the Gulf of Mexico in the 19th century. The narrative entitled "Commodore Aury," chronicles the life and experiences of Louis Michel Aury, while "Privateers of the Gulf" discusses the history of privateering in the Gulf of Mexico, including the career of Jean Laffite and the impact of tenuous relations between Spain, France, and the United States on trade and socio-economic conditions in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Texas.
