Biographical Note
Juan Bautista Elguézabal (1741-1805) was appointed adjutant inspector of the presidios of Coahuila and Texas in 1795, while also serving as assistant to governor of Texas, Manuel Muñoz, in 1796. After he was selected interim governor in 1797, Elguézabal promoted the development of Texas and allowed the Choctaw and the Alabama-Coushatta Indians to settle in the region east of the Trinity River. Elguézabal remained governor until his death in 1805.
