Biology student Hugh H. Duval attended the University of Texas at Austin. In addition, he conducted geological and botanical fieldwork in Bastrop County, Texas.

Scope and Contents

Comprising correspondence, field notes and journals, notebooks, newspaper clippings, geological and biological sketches and a photograph of Duval, the Hugh H. Duval Papers, 1907-1944, document Duval’s activities as a biology student at the University of Texas and as an amateur geologist and botanist. Correspondence concerns his research on flora, fauna, and the geophysical characteristics of Bastrop County, Texas. Field notes and journals contain observations and sketches of geological strata, fossils, and flora, while notebooks include assignments and lessons for a botany curriculum as well as ethics and biology. Additionally, newspaper clippings pertain to science associations and meetings as well as geology, and sketches depict geological specimens and strata. The archive contains one photograph of Duval, showing him on a horse in 1907.
