George John Durham (1820-1869) was born to William and Ester Durham in Norwich, Norfolk, England. An early settler in Austin, he served as a clerk in the governmental offices of the Republic of Texas (1838-1839), a noncommissioned officer in the Travis Guards (1841), a participant in the Archives War (1842), a chief clerk in the office of the state comptroller of public accounts (1846-1860), and as mayor of Austin (1852-1854). He was also a candidate for state treasurer (1865), a member of State Auditorial Board (1866-1867), a horticulturalist, an ornithologist, and a correspondent of the Smithsonian Institution.
