A Guide to the KLRU Carrascolendas Videotape Collection, [ca. 1970-1977]
Historical NoteCreated by Aida Barrera and produced by KLRU-TV in Austin, Texas, Carrascolendas is a children’s educational television program, which originally aired from 1970 to 1977. Centered around the Spanish- and English-speaking villagers of the fictional town Carrascolendas, the show promotes multiculturalism and diversity while teaching children, particularly Hispanic-Americans, how to deal with such emotions as loneliness and jealousy as well as the concepts of self-esteem and self-identity through affective education. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsConsisting of video, publicity materials, photographs, negatives, and teaching guides, the KLRU Carrascolendas Videotape Collection, [ca. 1970-1977], document the production and promotion of KLRU-TV’s children’s educational television program Carrascolendas. Video comprises DVDs of individual episodes from series 700 and 800 and U-matic and Beta videotapes of episodes from series 100 through 800, pilot episodes, promotional videos, introductions for different seasons, and a demo reel. Teaching guides, [ca. 1974-1977], discuss each episode for series 400 through 600, including the theme, plot and concepts, and activities for the classroom. Publicity and press releases, 1973-[ca. 1977], highlight the overall purpose of the program as well as individual series and episodes, while publicity photographs and negatives, [ca. 1970-1977], depict the cast, costumes, sets, and scenes of the production. Additionally, the collection includes an application for federal funding for 1974 to 1975 and Frank Korman’s 1974 dissertation, "Toward a Model of Cost-effectiveness Analysis for Educational Television Programming."
