Biographical Note

Born in Bastrop County, Texas, David Crockett Burleson (1837-1911) was the son of Edward Burleson, Sr., and Sarah Owen. After attending Baylor University, Burleson enlisted in James Hughes Callahan’s company of Texas Rangers in 1855 and was appointed sergeant-at-arms of the Texas Senate. In 1861, he formed and served as lieutenant in Company B of the 32nd Texas Cavalry for the Confederate Army. That same year Burleson married Louisa Ware, with whom he had five children. Following the Civil War, he established a horse ranch near San Marcos and then settled in Buda. In 1894, he moved to Austin, where he worked for the capitol police force.
