Biographical Note

Born near San Marcos, Texas, Emma Kyle Burleson (1869-1941) was the daughter of Edward Burleson, Jr. and Lucy Emma Kyle. After attending St. Mary’s Academy in Austin and the Augusta Female Seminary in Virginia, Emma settled in Austin. Since her paternal grandfather, Edward Burleson, Sr., fought in the Texas Revolution and served as vice president of the Republic of Texas and her father was a Texas Ranger who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War, Burleson developed an interest in Texas history. In 1906, she joined the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and later also became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She participated in a number of other organizations, including the Philosophical Society of Texas and the Texas Historical Commission.
