Biographical Note

Born to Lewis Randolph Bryan, Sr. and Martha Jane Shepard in Quintana, Texas, Lewis Randolph Bryan, Jr. (1892-1959) was a descendant of Moses Austin Bryan (1817-1895). After enrolling in the Virginia Military Institute and graduating from the University of Texas with a law degree in 1913, Bryan worked as an attorney in Houston for several years. During World War I, Bryan became a captain and eventually a major in the Thirty-sixth division of the U. S. Army. Following the war, he served as a lieutenant colonel in the Texas National Guard and returned to Houston, where he worked in the Lumberman’s National Bank, which later became the Second National Bank, as a cashier. Bryan was eventually appointed president of the bank in 1944 as well as president of the San Jacinto Museum of History Association and Philosophical Society of Texas. He also became a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and a trustee of the Texas Gulf Historical Associations. In 1924, he married Katharine McGown, with whom he had two sons.
