Historical Note
Established in LaGrange, Texas, the Brown, Lane, and Garwood Law Firm included attorneys Hiram Morgan Garwood (1864-1930), Joseph C. Brown, and Jonathan Lane. Brown, who passed the Texas State Bar in 1868, worked on a number of high profile cases, such as the dispute over William Mosby Eastland’s (1806-1843) estate in 1906, which examined the sale of his lands and a slave during the 1850s to repay debts.

Scope and Contents
Comprising correspondence, manuscripts, financial papers, and legal documents, the Brown, Lane, and Garwood Law Firm Records, 1843-1911, chronicle Joseph C. Brown’s investigations of the William Mosby Eastland estate case as well as two other cases involving bankruptcy and the accounts of a farm. Eastwood case documents consist of correspondence concerning various clients, lawyers, legal opponents, and descendants of Eastwood (1906-1907) and manuscripts such as his will. An inventory and an appraisal of his estate mentions the sale of various personal possessions, including a slave (1843-1850). Additional correspondence and financial records pertain to the accounts of M. L. Shropshire and the rental of her farm (1901-1907) as well as the bankruptcy of another client, M. Cockrill (1901-1907). The collection also contains Brown’s personal correspondence relating to his health issues and his cotton farm and legal papers concerning other cases (1889-1911).
