A Guide to the Daniel Baugh Brooks Letters, 1836, 1938
Biographical NoteBorn to Robert and Frances (Baugh) Brooks, Daniel Baugh Brooks (d. 1836) married Georgia Caroline Paul, with whom he would have one daughter, in Bibb County, Georgia, in 1835. That same year, Brooks joined Winn's Company of Georgia volunteers for the Texas Revolution as Second Lieutenant. By January 1836, Brooks arrived in Velasco, Texas, and was stationed at Victoria where he served as a mechanic under James W. Fannin, Jr. On March 21, 1836, after Fannin's surrender at the Battle of Coleto, Brooks was killed by Mexican troops. Source: Casey, Robert. "Brooks Family History." Interactive Family Histories. A letter from Brooks to his father written January 18, 1936 at Velasco describes his impressions of the country's land and wildlife as well as Brooks' pride in fighting for Texas. Additionally, two 1938 letters to the University of Texas from Brooks' granddaughter Mary Fox Hudson discuss UT's acquisition of the Brooks' letter and his life and death.
