In 1854, John Sweeney, Jr., and 17 other men of Brazoria County, Texas, filed a lawsuit against Uriah C. Coolgrove and county officials contesting the destruction of a public road from Blacks Ferry to Matagorda County in the construction of another road along the same route. In May 1855, the case came to trial at the county court before Judge Nelson H. Munger who found in favor of the defendants. After an appeal, the decision was reversed later that year.
