Biographical/Historical Note

Physician Edgar A. Blair (1902-1978) was born to Edgar P. and Sarah America Blair in Nashville, Tennessee. He received his M.S. degree from Vanderbilt University in 1927 and his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis in 1938. Blair served in the Missouri National Guard (1938-1958), rising to the rank of colonel. During this time, he was also an associate professor of physiology at Washington University in St. Louis. Upon his retirement from the military, Blair accepted a position as associate professor of physiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

Scope and Contents

Arranged chronologically, correspondence, publications, printed material, news clippings, sketches and photographs, comprise the Edgar A. Blair Papers, 1925-1978, documenting Blair’s medical career and military service. The majority of the correspondence, generated during Blair’s military career, deals with promotions, transfer requests, and commendations. Publications include reprints of articles by Blair published in the American Journal of Physiology (1938-1939). Printed material consists of military certificates, news clippings, biographical information, and medical files. Additionally, the collection contains photographs taken between 1946 and 1950 while Blair worked for the Army Medical Research Laboratory in Fort Knox, Kentucky.
