Biographical Note
Born in Weatherford, Texas, George Wythe (1893-1990) graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1914, where he had served as editor of
The Texan and was a charter member of the Sigma Delta Chi journalism fraternity. After college, he was a delegate the Henry Ford peace expedition and worked as a columnist for the Dallas News (1916-1917). During World War I, Wythe was wounded in France while serving with the 90th Infantry Division of the American Expeditionary Forces, but eventually rose to the rank of major. Upon his return to the states, he joined the U. S. Commerce Department, working as a trade representative in Turkey and Mexico and a Commercial Attaché-at-large in Europe. In the early 1930s, Wythe was called to Washington as an expert on Latin American commerce and industry and eventually became head of the Department's American Republics division. Wythe earned a doctorate in economics from George Washington University in 1938 and retired from the Department in 1960. He lectured on economics at several universities in the Washington, D. C., area before moving to Austria in 1972.
