			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>Born in Kansas City, Missouri, William Edward Whitmore, Sr. (1918-1996), worked as a refrigeration mechanic in San Francisco, California, where he lived with his wife Caroline. During World War II, Whitmore served as tank mechanic in the 752nd Tank Battalion. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign medal and the Good Conduct medal for his service.</p>

			<p>Correspondence, military documents, and photographs comprise the William E. Whitmore Collection, 1942-1945, chronicling his experiences as a soldier and mechanic stationed in Italy during World War II. Correspondence written in English, German, and Italian concerns Whitmore’s service in the war, while military documents consist of his certificate of honorable discharge from the army. Additionally, photographs taken in Italy depict the aftermath of Benito Mussolini’s execution.</p>
