Biographical Note

Born in Spring City, Tennessee, farmer George E. Smith joined the United States Army on May 26, 1918, at Moody, Texas. He served as a private during World War I before returning to Texas, where he was discharged at Camp Travis on June 21, 1919.

Scope and Contents

Comprised of military records, a photograph, a ticket, and a two-franc note, the George E. Smith Papers, 1917-1919, document Smith's military service during World War I. The military records include Smith's enlistment papers, discharge and activation cards. A photograph portrays the U. S. S. Leviathan, while the ticket provided passage on the naval ship. Additionally, the collection contains a two-franc note.
