A Guide to the Texas Council of Teachers of English Records, 1948-1999
The Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (TCTELA), formerly the Texas Council of Teachers of English (TCTE), is an organization of Texas educators that works to advance literacy among Texas students, share resources for teaching, and provide professional development opportunities for its members. Governed by a board that meets four times annually, TCTELA organizes an annual conference, awards achievements in English education, and lobbies for education- and literacy-related state and national legislation. The organization also publishes English in Texas: A Journal of the Council of Teachers of English as well as Texas Voices, a quarterly newsletter.

Journals, newsletters, minutes, subject files, and administrative files compose the Texas Council of Teachers of English (TCTE) Records, 1948-1999, documenting the history of the organization, its members, and its activities. Files of state chairmen and presidents, lists of nominated and elected officers, officer reports, and leadership handbooks chronicle the TCTE's leadership, while meeting minutes, constitutions, amendments, and resolutions relate to its governance. Files for committees on such issues as testing and assessments, teacher certification, and membership as well as copies of English in Texas, Texas Voices, and newsletters, illustrate the organization's research and interests. Membership lists, service plaques, and files on workshops, grants, and awards pertain to the activities of TCTE members. The records also contain information on TCTE's annual meetings as well as the National Council of Teachers of English conventions. Office related material, correspondence, insurance policies and statements, and financial material concern the administrative operations of the organization. Additionally, the records include artifacts like novelty pins.
