Biographical Note

A native of Kirchberg, Germany, Wilhelmina Layher (ca. 1873-1970) immigrated to the United States around 1888. Settling initially in Kansas, she married itinerant musician Frank Montgomery (ca. 1873-1941), with whom she had six children. In 1900, the couple moved to Port Arthur, Texas, where Frank worked at an oil refinery.
