A Guide to the S. N. Clabaugh Reminiscences, [ca. 1944]
Biographical NoteBorn in Madison County, Texas, S. N. Clabaugh (b. 1854) was one of seven children to C. F. and Betsy Clabaugh. In 1859, he moved with his family to Bosque County, Texas, where he worked as a rancher. After the death of his parents in the 1860s, Clabaugh moved to McLennan County, working as a farmhand until being hired by the Houston and Texas Central Railway from 1871 through 1872. For the next few years, he continued work as a rancher and was appointed deputy sheriff of McLennan County in 1875. Three year later, Clabaugh married Nannie Bell Nichols, with whom he had nine children. During the early 1900s, the couple moved to Hamilton County, where Clabaugh was elected commissioner in 1916. Additionally, the reminiscences describe his employment by the Houston and Texas Central Railway Company, his experiences as deputy sheriff in McLennan County, and his election as commissioner in Hamilton County.
