A Guide to the John Franklin Champenois Family Papers, 1862-1905
Biographical NoteBorn in Mobile, Alabama, John Franklin Champenois (1841-1900) was the son of Isaac Champenois and Louisa A. Crabtree. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the 3rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment of the Confederate Army, and Champenois was imprisoned in Camp Morton, Indiana, between 1863 and 1865. Correspondence consists of letters to his wife Fannie and other family members describing military engagements, such as the battle of Fort Donelson, and conditions within the Camp Morton prison. Additionally, newspaper clippings include obituary notices, while a photograph depicts members of the Champenois family.
