A Guide to the John Franklin Champenois Family Papers, 1862-1905

Biographical Note

Born in Mobile, Alabama, John Franklin Champenois (1841-1900) was the son of Isaac Champenois and Louisa A. Crabtree. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the 3rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment of the Confederate Army, and Champenois was imprisoned in Camp Morton, Indiana, between 1863 and 1865. Following the war, he returned to his wife, Fannie, and eventually settled in Shubuta, Mississippi.

Scope and Contents

Composed of photocopies of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and a photograph, the John Franklin Champenois Family Papers, 1862-1905, chronicle Champenois’ experiences fighting in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Correspondence consists of letters to his wife Fannie and other family members describing military engagements, such as the battle of Fort Donelson, and conditions within the Camp Morton prison. Additionally, newspaper clippings include obituary notices, while a photograph depicts members of the Champenois family.
