Biographical Note

Joseph L. Hume was real estate and livestock merchant as well as a banker in Austin, Texas. He operated the Hume Brothers firm with his brother George T. Hume and served as president of the First National Bank of Austin.

Forty-one letters and several associated documents compose the J. L. Hume Papers, 1896-1908, documenting Hume's financial and personal interests. Written by Hume to M. E. Church of Falls Creek, Virginia, the letters primarily concern the two men's interest in litigation over the estate of Thomas C. Bean. Additionally, the correspondence discusses Texas regional livestock and real estate market news, the Boer War, and flooding in Austin in 1900.
