Biographical NoteBorn in Duplin County, North Carolina, surveyor David B. Gillespie (1774-1829) graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1795 before joining Andrew Ellicott to mark the boundary of the United States in the area of Natchez, Mississippi. Gillespie Papers, 1822, [ca. late 1820s], undated, document the legal and business activities of Gillespie during the early 19th century. A December 29, 1822, letter from Gillespie at Westbrook, North Carolina, to Francis Horner concerns the estate of Archibald and James Gillespie, while an undated list of accounts itemizes the names and purchases of individuals for merchandise. Fragments of three legal documents, [ca. 1820s], contain a list of questions and two legal arguments or letters, discussing lawsuits involving Mr. [Andrez or Andry?] and Gillespie in the late 1820s.
